The biggest pricing mistake Sri Lankan freelancers make

Pricing for the local market when you sell to the world. Why it keeps you busy and broke, and how to price in dollars without losing orders.

You open Fiverr, look at what other sellers from Sri Lanka charge, and price yourself a little lower so you get noticed. It feels smart. It is the most expensive decision you will make as a freelancer.

The mistake: pricing for the wrong market

Your buyers are not in Colombo. They are in New York, London, Sydney and Berlin. A US startup founder does not compare your price to a Sri Lankan salary. They compare it to what a designer in their own country costs.

When you price at $5 for a logo or $15 for a landing page, you do not look affordable. You look risky. Serious buyers skip you, and the buyers who stay are the ones who want unlimited revisions for nothing.

Cheap prices do not attract good clients. They repel them.

What low prices actually cost you

  • More work for less money. You need ten small orders to earn what one proper order pays.
  • Worse clients. The lowest budgets usually come with the most demands.
  • No time to improve. You are too busy delivering cheap work to build the skills that get better work.
  • A ceiling on your reviews. Your profile fills with small jobs that do not prove you can handle big ones.

How to price on value instead

Start from the outcome the buyer gets, not the hours you spend. A landing page that brings in customers is worth far more to a business than the time it took you to design it.

  1. Pick a specific buyer. "SaaS startups" can pay more than "anyone who needs a website".
  2. Build three packages. Basic, Standard and Premium. Make Standard the obvious choice.
  3. Price Standard around a real hourly rate. Even as a beginner, aim for $12 to $15 an hour of real work.
  4. Raise prices after every five good reviews. Small steps, consistently.
Try it now: the free freelance price calculator turns your hours, skill and income goal into three USD packages.

"But I won't get orders if I charge more"

You will get fewer inquiries from the wrong people and more from the right ones. The fix for no orders is almost never a lower price. It is a clearer niche, a better portfolio and a gig that speaks to one type of buyer.

That is the whole idea behind LEAP: learn the skill, execute real projects, assemble a portfolio that gets chosen, then pitch and price like a professional. Never work for less.
