UI vs UX explained simply, and which one pays
The difference between UI and UX design in plain language, what each designer actually does, and why clients pay for both together.
UI and UX get mixed up all the time. Here is the simplest way to understand them, and why the freelancers who understand both earn the most.
UX: how it works
UX (user experience) is about the journey. Can people find what they need? Is checkout easy? Do they understand what to do next? UX designers research users, map flows and sketch wireframes before anything looks pretty.
UI: how it looks
UI (user interface) is the visual layer. Colors, typography, buttons, spacing and icons. UI designers make the structure beautiful, consistent and clear.
| UX | UI | |
|---|---|---|
| Question | Does it work for people? | Does it look and feel right? |
| Outputs | Research, flows, wireframes | Screens, styles, components |
| Tools | Interviews, FigJam, Figma | Figma |
Which one pays?
Clients rarely want only one. A startup wants an app that works and looks great. Freelancers who can do both, and explain their decisions, are the ones who win bigger projects and charge in dollars.
